Linux Progress Patch

Miester sent us a cool site for all of you Linux fans, The Linux Progress Patch. "The Linux Progress Patch is a kernel patch which displays a full-screen logo with a progress bar and some informational text while booting. It hides the normal startup messages printed by the kernel, and is meant for people that don't care about complicated and possibly confusing boot messages." You can read more about the project at their web site here. Be sure to check out some of the screen shots and start pages. A list of the different themes for startup can be found here....

Intel's new Chip goes head to head with Transmeta

A story carried by Cnet and released on Yahoo tells us about the new battle heating up between Intel and Transmeta. Last year Transmeta released the new Crusoe chip which brought us a chip that consumed much less power than today's chip giving notebooks about 6 hours of battery life. Intel Tuesday released its new chip, PIII 500MHz, which according to Intel is "the lowest-power-consuming PC processor that has ever been built". Some may remember IBM dropping the Crusoe line of Thinkpads last year due to marketing, testing and other things. Well, it turns out that IBM has adopted Intel's...

Compaq brings server clustering to Linux through SteelEye's Software

It seems that Compaq is trying to bring a little more redunacy to Linux through SteelEye's clustering software. Some of you may know that clustering technology is already available for Linux however the different is that SteelEye's software extends the failover capabilities from one machine to another. This is great for those companies looking at high end web and database servers. It is also kinda bad for companies like Sun Microsystems who are currently striving in this type of business. It is a about time that Compaq steps up and makes some noise as IBM has been stealing all of...

ZorKa Gets /.ed

Well if you don't know about Slashdot, we forgive you but you HAVE to start going there once a day (after you visit us of course). Slashdot is an online news forum for pretty much computer geeks. Anyway, today I had an article that I submitted get posted and for some reason in my hurry to submit the post and leave for the office I had a typo in the subject, Hemos I apologize for you taking all of the heat on the replies, my bad. I took a screen shot after Moonkhan emailed me the news.

Favorite Super Bowl Commercial

"I have to say that I wasn't as hyped about the Super Bowl this year as I normally am. However, I did catch all of the ommercials. Here is how we ranked the commercials: 1st Place - Budweiser commercial with the dog who was an alien 2nd Place - Budweiser commercial where the yuppy white guys called each other on a "What's up!" parady

Eric Raymond comes to Ann Arbor

It was a big night this past week in Ann Arbor when this past Thursday evening Eric Raymond, the gentlemen who's paper "The Cathedral and the Bazaare" caused Netscape to open source their browswer, gave his speech at the University of Michigan Union. This is not Eric's first time to grace us with his prescence as he seems to visit Ann Arbor about once every year. Here are some of the topics he covered Why the Open Source Model in Programming How to make money with Open Source Anthropolgy involved with Open Source Linux Advocacy If you happended to miss Eric's talk, you can visit...

The Cheating ways of the Internet

I was crusing the net today and crusing by sites that I haven't visited in awhile trying to catch up on some industry news. During my surfing I was trying to locate which manufacturers have started to adopt the new nVidia Geforce2 Go chipset in there laptops. As usual I decided to go over to Google to do my search. So, I quickly typed in what I thought was "google" and pressed enter. I was immediately greeted with a "GoTo" web page. I quickly realized that I typed in "gogle". That got me to thinking.....I wonder if I should register...

Have a seat in the E-Cliner

I've been looking for the ultimate in geek furniture for quite sometime and bumped into a neat peice of furniture released today by Lazyboy. It is not the perfect peice of furniture since Microsoft has a hand in it, but I am writing a letter to all of the Linux Companies now to get that fixed. Complete with built in phone jacks, wireless keyboard, a fold out stand for a laptop and only $1299.00, the E-Cliner is ready for web surfing and computer fun.

I'll take whats behind door number 2!

There was an article posted to Yahoo.Com about tech companies offering employees gizmos, gagdets, and other awards to retain them in the company instead of cash bonuses and stock options. What ever happened to just getting up, going to work, and just collecting a paycheck on Friday. Has our society stooped to the point to where people have to even rewarded for doing what they were paid to do in the first place? Don't get me wrong, I am all for companies rewarding employees who make a real contribution to the team but all of this getting something for nothing...

Linux has lost its Innocence

Zdnet.Com is running an article about Linux loosing its innocence and no longer being a novelty. The article will not make you run out and buy the book but it does bring up a few good points about the current state of Linux (althought I think there are some more basic key things that need to be done) and what needs to be accomplished. As the author puts it: "The heydays of pure Linux plays have faded."

New Unstable Directory for Debian

This is a little old news but several people I have talked to haven't heard so here it is. Change your /etc/apt/sources.list file and change the word potato or woody to "sid". Sid is the latest most unstable release of the Debian Linux distribution. Basically if you want to run all of the latest updates to all of the current Linux packages use "sid". If you are running a server, point it it to potato (current stable).

Linux 2.4 Kernel pre-released

One of our readers sent us this story posted on Yahoo which covers the pre-release of the 2.4 kernel for Linux. Linus Torvalds states in the release that he isn't projecting the 2.4 official release however we have to note this is the 4th time rumors of the official release have been spread. This isn't a bad thing that it is taking this long. I think most of the Linux community will agree that we don't want the new kernel unless it is stable and very well debugged. I have been playing with 2.4test<1-10> for awhile now and it is only...

A lesson to be learned

It seems that when you need something the most it always lets you down. Being on vacation for the past week made me realize just how much my computer life revolved around having my server up and running. A word to the wise it LEAVE A KEY WITH SOMEBODY! I apologize to everyone for not be up for the last few days but I couldn't drive 1,000 miles just to reboot my server. Since no one is paying anything to be on this server, what can I say but you get what you pay for!
