Gnome 1.4 Released

Gnome 1.4 was released today. Tons of new features have been added to the new release and it is suppose to have a more "professional" look and feel to it. One of the nice features touted is the Red Carpet updater. Basically Red Carpet controls updates to your system. The Natilus file manager is also included. If you are running Linux get out to their site and start downloading! Let us know how it works.

Debian Installation Howto

Debian isn't for everyone (before you get to excited) Introduction The following document describes a typical install process for Debian Linux. Debian is a free operating system (OS) for your computer. An operating system is the set of basic programs and utilities that make your computer run. Debian uses the Linux kernel (the core of an operating system), but most of the basic OS tools come from the GNU project; hence the name GNU/Linux. This document is not written at a "beginner" level and is not intended to assist users who want to learn Linux. It is tailored towards a more experienced...

Slashdot to deliver news to mobile/wireless users

By partnering with another company called Digital Paths, SlashDot.Org will be delivering its content to wireless and mobile subscribers. Slashdot is hailed as the number one site for technical gurus. Currently the site receives over 2 million unique visitors in a month. After digging around DigitalPaths.Com web site I noticed the only option to get the Slashdot material was through downloading a palm os based PDQ. Also on there site I noticed one could also order flowers through another download of a PDQ. Before you run out and start downloading be sure to read the fine print: "It will run on...

Outpost.Com no longer offering free shipping

I recieved the following email from Darryl Peck, CEO of OutPost.Com. They are an online computer hardware vendor that has been loosing millions of dollars due to there free shipping rates and 24 hour service. Personally, I don't know why they started it in the first place. Yeah, it is a great idea, but a stupid one as far as business decisions go. Click "Read More" to view the email. If only they would have listened to me sooner. Subject: Important Announcement from Outpost.com Greetings Outpost.com Customer: As you all know these are tough times for dot.com companies. And while...

Basic Unix Commands and Concepts

Ahhhhh Linux That sweet smell of plastic, gold, copper, and bunch of Hackers. It's a sweet smell that I have come to love over the years. We will also touch on some basic and essential tools that are standard while using the Linux Operating System as well as touch on some concepts that will hopefully help the reader to better understand why things are the way they are....

Let me step outside while I charge my phone

It is coming and I say about time. Imagine that by simply being in the sun you will be charging your cell phone or PDA. A German lab has come up with just this type of technology to allow users to throw away batteries for good in mobile phones and PDAs. Not a bad idea really. The technology is way to expensive for the mass market (as always) but within a few years who knows. You can read more about the article here.

New Dual AMD system by Boxx Technology

If you are a game developer or work in the movie industry you may be familiar with BoxxTech. If not that is OK. Boxx builds high end dual processor machines for these types of industries. They recently announced a new system, 3DBOXX R1 Series Of Workstations Based On AMD Athlon Processors. It is based on a 1.4GHz AMD Athlon CPU and is running dual processors. The article was first released here. Pricing on the unit starts at $3200.00, which isn't bad considering all you get. Basically they are packing the box full of goodies. As yes, it will play Quake!...

Goodbye to Indrema

Last year we posted an article about Indrema and their very cool linux gaming console. Althought the idea was great, call it bad timing. Their site is still up as nothing has happened but they have let all of their employees go. They only had about 50 employees at any one time. They let the remainder of their employees go last week. That is to bad. The idea was good, they should have just given it to someone else who could have done something with it. Good bye Indrema!

NSA is locking down Linux

It looks like the NSA is going to throw some funds at Linux to help tighten up its security. The NSA is interested in a version of Linux that is kept more secure by restraining programs so they have only the bare minimum of privileges required to do their jobs. That would make it harder for attackers to take advantage of "buffer overrun" or "format string" vulnerabilities. The NSA awarded the two-year, $1.2 million contract to the PGP Security division of the Santa Clara, Calif.-based company, Network Associates announced Monday. The company will add more security features into a version...

Want to sell your boss on Linux?

Try starting with this article from Intel. I mean come on, if Intel gets it, why can't everyone else right? Highly recommended read. The page can be found here. They cover a lot of who is using Linux, what is changing, where it is going, how much it is growing by, etc, etc, etc. Basically, just memorize it, then go into your boss's office and dazzle him/her.

Another case of stupidity trying to fight back

I personally think this is funny as heck. Hmm, let's see. When Red Hat filed its IPO in 1999, the stock market went crazy and people became millionaires over night (meaning the people that work there). I call it funny money and a lot of stupidity. I mean come on, anyone that buys a share of stock at $150.00 on a company that has only been selling about 3 Million dollars worth of software a year has got to be STUPID! This slight rant on the whole IPO/Stock Market thing steams from an article I found HERE on Yahoo. Basically...

Which platform and which desktop?

Have you ever said to yourself, "If I could start over and get what I wanted in a computer, I would get a blank." I bumped into an article from Zdnet here that sorta touches on this topic. I have been a fan of just about everything at one time or another. However, I find myself coming back to an Enlightenment desktop more times than not (and don't try running your P200 on it either). However, this article raises the question, right now who wins the desktop war? The authors vote in the practical sense for Windows 2K because of its...
