Go see Shrek

"Shrek hit the theaters yesterday and is getting rave reviews for its animation and graphics. Everyone remembers the Toy Story series which was done by Pixar. Shrek is done in the same style, however, with much more flare! I was amazed at the opening scenes at what they have done with the animation. It is truely amazing to say the least. Get up from your chair now and go see it! It is worthy of noting that the movie was made using Linux workstations and servers instead of SGI or Microsoft based platforms. Studios in Hollywood are making a...

AMD hopes that by naming the processors "4" (forget 2 and 3) it will increase its market share against Intel who isn't scheduled to release a mobile version of the Pentium 4 processor until 2002. Compaq has already adopted the Athlon 4 in several Presario notebooks and soon others will follow. The bottom line: If you have been wanting a high powered notebook then grab one of the Athlon based notebooks hitting the shelves later this summer. Read more...

Microsoft's XP slated for October 29th

Acording to Yahoo, Microsoft has announced its plans to release Windows XP October 29th of this year. There will be two versions of XP, one for home and one for professional use. The home version will replace windows 98 and ME while the professional version will replace NT and 2000 (pretty obvious I know). Unless you have been under a rock, you know that PC sales are down, approximately 9.5 percent. The PC manufacturers, as always, are hoping the new release will increase sales in the third quarter. We (meaning the computer educated) know this will not be the case...

Vmware 2.03 Reviewed

Cnet has a nice review on Vmware 2.03. If you are an IT admin who runs Linux on the desktop but needs to run the occasional windows app, Vmware might be for you. The Good My experience with Vmware has actually been quite good. I have had Vmware running Windows NT in full 1024x768 screen mode while running under Linux. Vmware actually runs in what I call a bios emulation mode. Meaning, when you actually start windows, you actually boot a complete virtual machine. Running Windows NT under Vmware I have actually cruised the web, played with my palm pilot, ran...

Quickies

Just a few quick stories since there isn't enough to post on all of them. First up is the article about Microsoft announcing that Open Source is flawed and is horrible. You can read more about the article here. Since open source is horrible (here comes the sarcasm), hackers found a BIG whole in one of Microsofts products. Read more here. I don't have links to the articles, but IBM is putting Linux on IBM mainframes in a bank. Pretty cool story, wish I could have found it again.
