Amazon switches to Linux and cuts cost

The online retailer Amazon states they were able to reduce technology cost by 25% after switching to the Linux operating system. I've often said the best thing that could happen to Linux is a recession. Companies will have to make adjustments in technolgy if there is no money to spend on Microsoft products. I am not sure how you spend $189 million dollars on technology but somehow they managed to spend that much in only 9 months of this year alone. For more information read the article on Yahoo!.

I got my DVD player working under Debian today. I want to thank the folks over at VideoLan.Org for all of the hard work they have put into the Video Lan package. I've got some screen shots for you to enjoy as well as how to set it up. Screen Shots I have 2 screen shots of "The Mummy Returns" playing on the desktop. Each show the DVD playing at different sizes. Who owns your domain name?

As companies purchase more and more domains, keeping track of these domains can get rather confusing as to which ones have been paid and which ones haven't. A recent company who made a web site for children recently had their domain register by someone else who put up a pornographic site. The scoop From the NYTimes: "The sudden change of scenery was a result of an expired domain registration, a situation that has become more common as companies amass dozens of Web addresses, which generally must be renewed every year. Ernst & Young had not renewed the registrations for the Moneyopolis...

Flooz.Com Files Bankruptcy

I received an email today that the online company Flooz.Com has filed for bankruptcy as of August 31st, 2001. The email didn't state whether or not they are completely shutting down but that is usually the case when members or subscribers get this type of alert. Read more for the details. Below is a copy of the email I received. If you are not familiar with Flooz.com they are what I call a "Gift Certficicate" shop. Basically the idea is that you go to there site, buy some "Flooz" and then they would email the recipient for you. That person...

Nvidia GeForce 3 under Debian Linux

I recently acquired a GeForce 3 nVidia card by VisionTek and got it working under Debian Linux. Read more for the details! Setting up the GeForce 3 64MB DDR under Debian After getting the new card I couldn't wait to get it into the system, download the drivers and see how many frames per second Quake III under Linux was going to give me. The setup is relatively painless just make sure you read all of the docs on nVidia's site. Here are the steps that you will need to take: 1. Download the drivers from nvidia 2. Compile the drivers (both the...

Linux Mandrake 8.1 Delayed

Although the latest version of Mandrake 8.1 is available for download the company is having trouble manufacturing the product and getting it to market as quickly as they wanted. Co-workers recently installed 8.1 and the new product looks promising. The Scoop An article on Yahoo stated the new 8.1 CD's were suppose to be shipped by the end of September, however since the company moved production to the US they recently notified customers of a delay. 8.1 Installation Notes The biggest complaint we had in the office after installing 8.1 was "I still can't print!". Printing under Linux is no simple task setting...
