Back in one hour

I grew up in a small town and it wasn’t uncommon when I was growing up to go to the town square and see something like this on store windows: “At lunch, back at 1:00” Notice the definitive time when the business owner will be back. I was reminded of this today when I pulled up twitter and saw this: Ok, that’s great, but WHEN DID YOU START COUNTING?

Do I Search That Much?

Did you know that Google keeps a history of things for you on their site? Try http://www.google.com/history/ if you have a Google account.  You’ll find some interesting information out about yourself.  For example I had no idea that I searched more in the month of May than any other month coming in at 792 searches. I also didn’t know that I search for more things on the Internet on Monday than any other day.  It must be all of that downtime built up from the weekend before. Of course they are just...

New Charcoal Grill – Brinkmann Stainless Steel

When we lived in Ann Arbor, MI several years ago, our apartment complex wouldn’t let us use a charcoal grill.  Thus, we had to purchase a gas grill.  Being a charcoal guy I was incredibly disappointed. Fast forward 6-7 years later our $119.00 Wal-mart special gas grill had seen its better days.  Out of gas and needing to replace the burners and more it was time to upgrade. Using a birthday gift certificate from Sue (Ellen’s mom) and some ad money from the blog I purchased the Brinkmann Profession Stainless Steel Charcoal Grill (model 810-3214-S) as the...

Deep Fried Bytes Episode 6: Talking Domain-Driven Design with David Laribee - Part 1

Last week we recorded our 6th episode of Deep Fried Bytes with guest David Laribee.  We started talking to David and before we knew it was two hours later!  To say time flew by would be an understatement.  There was so much good material that we broke the show up into two parts.  The first part released on July 16th is about 35 minutes in length.  Yeah, kind of short but it was the best place to stop the conversation and pick it back up.  The second part will be at least 45 minutes or longer.  The topic...

What You Should Know About the 3G iPhone Before You Sync It With Your Exchange Server

Today Apple launched their new iPhone.  Countless users are upgrading everywhere looking forward to playing with the new features of the 3G iPhone.  Before you connect your new iPhone toy to your enterprise exchange server there are a few things you need to be aware of.  For some of you these may be complete show stoppers. I would have entertained the idea of getting an iPhone until I read this, thus I thought I'd pass it along. Only Sync With One Computer When you enable Exchange syncing on your iPhone to get emails from work, the phone will no longer...

My Infatuation With the Word "Bytes"

I just noticed something this morning. I have an infatuation with the word "bytes".  Yep. I just recognized that.  I had a #TwitterTribe member visiting from Tennessee last night and after we migrated to the computer we started talking about past blogs and other stuff.  We were discussing redirects and combining blogs and that's when I pulled up my old ZorKa blog (which isn't available for viewing anymore so no link).  After switching back and forth between my old site and this site I realized something that I hadn't noticed before.  My old blog title had the word "Bytes" in...

Installing Ubuntu Linux - Is It As Perfect As They Say?

It has probably been four years since I last installed Linux from scratch.  It isn't that I haven't touched a Linux command prompt or system in four years, it just that all of my installs are on my servers which just get updates applied.  I decided to install Ubuntu Linux the other morning on an older Dell laptop I have replacing Windows.  All this laptop is used for is surfing the web around the house.  It lives next to my man chair (recliner) in the living room.  The purpose of this exercise was twofold.  From a usability point of view...

Creating Event Handlers in C# The Definitive Guide

Ok Chris Love, this one's for you.  Here is how you create an event handler in C# using Visual Studio. Here is a form I built in a matter of seconds.  I know, we'll discuss my mad design skills later. Let's pretend I was in the code behind and wanted to create a Form Load event.  In the code behind within the constructor start typing until you find the event you want to create as shown here: Once located press <Enter> to auto complete the name.  Here is the step that a lot of people...

Deep Fried Bytes Episode 5: Developing .NET Software on a Mac

Episode 5 of Deep Fried Bytes is out!  This episode is a real cross pollination of technologies whereby we are talking about doing .Net development using a Mac.  My Show Notes About five or six years ago I purchased a Mac.  As a long time Unix user I loved it and spent countless hours preaching it's never ending hotness.  Then I got a job whereby using the right tool for the job was .Net.  My Powerbook wasn't fast enough to virtualize development of any sort since it only had a G4 processor running at 867MHz.  I did have a...

Guitar Hero - The New Drum Kit

News has been floating around that EA/Harmonix/MTV is going to release a new version of their hit Guitar Hero this year entitled......(drum roll)....... (pun intended)........ Guitar Hero World Tour! (cymbal crash!).  One of the changes is they are adding a drum kit.  Being an avid Rock Band drummer I was happy to hear they are adding crash cymbals to it as shown here. So what's not to like?  Personally, and this is just me, I think it is missing an extra tom tom to the right of the green pad.  If they really wanted to provide a real...

I Was Harassed and Verbally Abused By A First Grader On AOL Instant Messenger

Yesterday I was working at the computer and I got this random message from someone I didn't recognize.  I publish my instant message and email on the Internet freely for the very reason so people can find me and contact me.  It is not unusual to have someone ping me asking for help or a friend trying to get back in touch.  I politely said hello and do I know you.  They said no they just wanted to chat.  I politely explained if we didn't know each other I didn't have an interest.  They said good bye and we went...
