Catfishing with Keith is an annual trip where friends of Keith (and friends of friends) get together for an annual fishing trip on the beautiful waters of Pickwick Lake. Keith grew up about an hour from Pickwick Lake and his family has been enjoying these waters for generations starting with his great great great Grandfather who fought over these waters at the Battle of Shiloh.
Friends from all over the US and Canada descend upon Pickwick starting the Wednesday after Memorial Weekend and leave the following Monday. Most organize a boat crew from their respectful areas or share a boat with others depending on the situation to take part in the enjoyment. There is lots of fishing, skiing, tubing, grilling and fish fries to keep everyone busy. Or you can relax at the town house and just enjoy the beautiful view of the lake.
Why Pickwick Lake? Numerous reasons.
- One it is one of the best fishing places in the South. If you watch bass master tournaments on TV, you’ll see Pickwick at some point.
- Second, my family has been fishing and relaxing on these waters for many generations.
- Pickwick also has the 2nd largest inland marina in the United States and there are three marinas on the water for us to use.
- It is in the pinky toes of the mountains so there is a lot of rock walls, which makes for beautiful water and great breeding grounds for catfish.
- Did I mention there was a beautiful waterfall about 60 feet high with a rope for those a little more venturous? This is where the Redneck Yacht Club also meets daily. If we aren’t fishing, we’ll probably be here.
- You can put a boat in at Pickwick and ski to Mobile, AL. No one is going to do it but it is an interesting trivia fact.
- 44,000 acres of water with over 590+ miles of shore line and 5 marinas on the water and boat 100+ ft and larger
- You can wake up in Mississippi, fish in Alabama and party in Tennessee. A three state tour in one day, on the water or land!

- There is a full blown fish cleaning station

The Daily Routine
We typically try get up around 5 or 5:30 AM and try to be out on the water by 6:00 AM to catch the morning bite. This depends on how late we stayed up playing poker the night before. We fish till 9, 10, or 11 depending on how the bite is going and hit the fish cleaning station to clean the fish. Then we come back to the townhouse and eat, clean up, etc.
For lunch we either fire up the grill or fix sandwiches then hit the water.
We ski/tube and usually make our way to the waterfall. Those brave enough jump off.
About 4 or 4:30 we go fishing and fish till dark.
When it is dark we heat the grill or smoker up or we have a fish fry.
Rinse and repeat.
If you aren’t a morning person, don’t worry, not everyone is. Those that are true fisherman get up and go fishing, those that aren’t sleep in.
