20 Years of Usenet

From Google: “Google has fully integrated the past 20 years of Usenet archives into Google Groups, which now offers access to more than 700 million messages dating back to 1981. We believe this to be the most complete collection of Usenet articles ever assembled and a fascinating first-hand historical account.

We are compiling some especially memorable articles and threads in the timeline below. For example, read Tim Berners-Lee’s announcement of what became the World Wide Web or Linus Torvalds’ first post about his “pet project”. If you come across other noteworthy posts while searching the archive, please forward them to us at usenet-timeline@google.com. Please note that while your own first post was undoubtedly of great personal historical value, we will only be able to include submissions of interest to a wide range of users.

Thanks, and enjoy your trip back to the golden age of Usenet.

The online retailer Amazon states they were able to reduce technology cost by 25% after switching to the Linux operating system. I’ve often said the best thing that could happen to Linux is a recession. Companies will have to make adjustments in technolgy if there is no money to spend on Microsoft products. I am not sure how you spend $189 million dollars on technology but somehow they managed to spend that much in only 9 months of this year alone. For more information read the article on Yahoo!.

As companies purchase more and more domains, keeping track of these domains can get rather confusing as to which ones have been paid and which ones haven’t. A recent company who made a web site for children recently had their domain register by someone else who put up a pornographic site.

I received an email today that the online company Flooz.Com has filed for bankruptcy as of August 31st, 2001. The email didn’t state whether or not they are completely shutting down but that is usually the case when members or subscribers get this type of alert. Read more for the details.
