Vmware 2.03 Reviewed

Cnet has a nice review on Vmware 2.03. If you are an IT admin who runs Linux on the desktop but needs to run the occasional windows app, Vmware might be for you.

The Good
My experience with Vmware has actually been quite good. I have had Vmware running Windows NT in full 1024×768 screen mode while running under Linux. Vmware actually runs in what I call a bios emulation mode. Meaning, when you actually start windows, you actually boot a complete virtual machine. Running Windows NT under Vmware I have actually cruised the web, played with my palm pilot, ran a contact manager and just about anything else in Vmware. Games however are out of the question.

The Bad
Running Vmware requires a lot of ram (at least 256MB) and a pretty heavy processor (I recommend an 800 Athlon or higher). It is expensive. VMware comes with a nice price tag as well so before getting all giddy about running out and getting a copy, check the price tag. Also, not all of your hardware is going to work under Vmware so double check the list!

Gnome 1.4 was released today. Tons of new features have been added to the new release and it is suppose to have a more “professional” look and feel to it. One of the nice features touted is the Red Carpet updater. Basically Red Carpet controls updates to your system. The Natilus file manager is also included. If you are running Linux get out to their site and start downloading! Let us know how it works.

Which platform and which desktop?

Have you ever said to yourself, “If I could start over and get what I wanted in a computer, I would get a blank.” I bumped into an article from Zdnet here that sorta touches on this topic. I have been a fan of just about everything at one time or another. However, I find myself coming back to an Enlightenment desktop more times than not (and don’t try running your P200 on it either). However, this article raises the question, right now who wins the desktop war? The authors vote in the practical sense for Windows 2K because of its stability but he prefers KDE on a Caldera machine. I would personally classify Caldera and KDE the worst torture on a desktop imagineable, but to each his own right? So, this opens up the question:

“What are you running, why, and if you had your druthers what would like to run?”

MS Wants To Outlaw Open Source

Slashdot is carrying the ever talked about article about Microsoft stating that open source threatens the American Way. Ok folks, get ready. Here they come. Microsoft FUD at its very best. It is only going to get worse before it gets better people. This type of stuff agravates the heck out of me. If the stupid web sites that post this stuff would stop submitting articles about this type of FUD I would be much happier. But ohhhhhh no! No one will visit their site unless they post a bunch of flamtory articles submitted and written by Microsoft.

Microsoft did the same thing to IBM back when OS/2 was released and when the MAC was released. This means one thing and one thing only, They are scared!.

Latest Mozilla, Not Bad

It has been about 4 months since I tried running Mozilla’s latest offering of the open source browser. When I did I have to be honest, I didn’t like it. Yeah it was pretty and had some good ideas but I didn’t like it. Why, well for starters it was slow as heck!. Pages took forever to render and it crashed.
