Review of the Tivo

I was fortunate enough this Christmas season to be given an extremely cool geek gift, a Tivo. I figured I would play with it for a week or so before posting something to the site about it. If you have no idea what a ‘Tivo’ is, then read on, hopefully I will do a fair job in explaining how this electronic device will change the way you watch TV.

One of my good friends who likes to play with old technology and make it do something weird and unusal sent me a link to his latest experiment. It seems he has turned a Tandy 8088 into a web server. That is right, 8088, Tandy, web server.

Amazon switches to Linux and cuts cost

The online retailer Amazon states they were able to reduce technology cost by 25% after switching to the Linux operating system. I’ve often said the best thing that could happen to Linux is a recession. Companies will have to make adjustments in technolgy if there is no money to spend on Microsoft products. I am not sure how you spend $189 million dollars on technology but somehow they managed to spend that much in only 9 months of this year alone. For more information read the article on Yahoo!.

DVD Under Linux

I got my DVD player working under Debian today. I want to thank the folks over at VideoLan.Org for all of the hard work they have put into the Video Lan package. I’ve got some screen shots for you to enjoy as well as how to set it up.
