I always find myself defending my decision to purchase an Apple laptop when visiting friends or clients. Not that I care that I am light years ahead of them or anything, but I always find myself saying the same thing. After I connect to their network, access the internet and print to their windows printers they all start to say, “… hmmm OS X is pretty slick”. That is usually followed up with “… but they are expensive and I couldn’t afford one”. I usually explain that Apple doesn’t make “cheap” computers and if you compare apples to apples (no pun intended) they are about the same. It turns out someone else took the time to do a real comparison. You can read his article and comparison about the least expensive laptop.

It seems Microsoft has released a new CD and DVD copyright protection tool which lets recording companies restrict how CDs and DVDs are used on computers. A few companies have already announced they have adopted it. Of course this is built around the windows media player (like anyone uses it). They cliam to be able to limit the number of times a user can play the content on a PC and also claim to be able to restrict copying the content to various removeable media devices (mp3 players etc). I can see the press release from the RIAA now. “We have been working hard with Microsoft to produce a solid way for content providers to protect content and …..” (two weeks later on slashdot) “H4x0R writes, I just cracked the Windows Media DRM technology. It wasn’t that hard actually since the key to unlock the CD or DVD is a MD5 check sum of the song or movie title”.

I’ve been extremely busy lately and have been wanting to make needed changes to the site. However, clients are demanding projects get done, students want their tests graded and my dog wants to go outside to use the bathroom. Everything seems to just pile up and pile up doesn’t it? Well, I’ve been away for sometime so let me get you caught up on what is going on.

I picked up a new toy this weekend called the “HipTop” produced by Danger, Inc.. It is the coolest device I have ever owned in terms of a PDA, phone combo. The HipTop is an always on device, the first one of its kind. The bottom line is that I can surf a web page, check email and get instant messages through AIM anytime I want when I am away from the computer.
